Have you always wanted to prepare fiber from the raw fleece? Or wondered all the available fiber preparations mean and how they get that way? You will learn how it is done with Margaret in this class. Look at various breeds and fiber types, skirt a freshly sheered fleece, learn how to wash it, and come back the next week and card, comb, flick and drum card your fluff. This is a great class for any fiber enthusiast. Felters & weavers, come join! No spinning will be done in the class.

Knitting: Reading a Pattern
Not always so easy, eh? Do you ever flounder when you want to start a project? Learn how to choose your yarn and pattern, and how to decipher the knitted abbreviations that seem to vary so much. Discuss substitutions and variables, yarn types, reading labels, stitch guide and swatch measuring. Do a pattern “read-thru” and learn about errata and where to find? Adapt your handspun? Yes!
Sunday Feb.13, 1 to 2PM. $8. Margaret Magic.
Novelty Yarns Series: Boucle
Come and learn more about novelty yarn technique with Heather. Boucle means "to curl or buckle," and this yarn does this by way of it's irregular structure. It is the means by which yarn gets loops and bumps. (Your big opportunity to come to the yarn shop, get loopy and no one will have to call a cab for you to get home!)
Bring your basic spinning skills and a wheel and have fun! Heather will provide materials (clean mohair and wensleydale locks and binder thread) to spin, included in fee. If you really want to use your own, fee drops $10.
Wednesday, Feb. 9, 4PM to 6PM. $30. Heather Seevers.
Novelty Yarn Series: Spinning Thick and Thin
This class is a great opportunity for the spinner to explore (or revisit?) irregular yarn. That lovely chunky stuff you look wistfully at a new spinner turning out? Heather will guide you through making it with control and show you how it is the technique at the root of noils, wraps and all sorts of fun novelty yarns!
You will need to bring your basic spinning skills, a wheel and some prepared roving. If you need supplies, you'll get a 10% discount as a student. If you need to arrange to use a shop wheel for the class, let us know when you sign up. Don't forget your sense of humor!
Saturday, Feb.5th. 11AM to 1 PM. $20. Heather Seevers, teacher extraordinaire.

Spinning: Drop Spindle Class
Want to learn an age-old fun and portable way of making your own yarn? Learn to spin using this historical, inexpensive devise – used worldwide! You will learn to spin using the “park-and-draft” method, ply your own handspun and make a skein of it in the end. Margaret will show you the tricks of making a center-pull ball to work from, too.
Bring your curiosity. Drop spindle and fiber can be purchased with 10% student discount. Ask staff for assistance when you sign up.

Happy 2011!
I am loving being in the pilot's house of NW Handspun Yarns. I feel like I am steering a giant community touchpoint through a sea of fiberlives. It is just plain fun -- and a lot of work! We are pulling together our class and events schedule for the new year as I write, updating the website and generally trying to get to the things we have woefully neglected in the busy fall. So more plans a-coming. I am looking forward to a great your with you all!
stay calm, be brave, wait for the sign......
